Since the works of Gary Kelly¹ and Marilyn Butler² in the 1970s, William Godwin, Thomas Holcroft and Robert Bage are usually considered as part of the same group of politically committed novelists who enthusiastically supported the French Revolution in the last decade of the eighteenth century. The four writers originally considered by Gary Kelly were Godwin, Holcroft, Bage and Elizabeth Inchbald, but the group has expanded since, as more and more studies born of this revived interest in the literature of the revolutionary period claimed other novelists, principally Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Hays and Charlotte Smith, for the same ‘ Jacobin’...
