Un espace adapté au « pratiquer féminin »? Étude d’une nouvelle offre de services sur le marché de la forme

Abstract : If we consider gender mixing as “the coexistence of both sexes in the same social space” (Baudoux & Zaidman 1992), then the opening of fitness centers reserved for women in France imposes a non-mixing policy. This idea is not new in the field of sports, but it is particularly recent with regard to the “fitness market” (Mischler & Pichot 2005). Forbidden to men, these spaces would offer a sports offer adapted to the characteristics of “women’s sports” (Louveau 1998). This is what was wanted to be put to the test through different investigative techniques combining the analysis of communication media, participating and non-participating observations in the so-called fitness rooms reserved for women and interviews with the managers (managers and supervisors) of these sports institutions.
