Les titres de presse dans The Shipping News : intertexte et caractérisation

This article defends the notion that, in The Shipping News, the irruption of newspaper headlines as ways of expressing the main character’s thoughts are a fundamental tool of his characterisation and of the exposition of his psychological evolution. Semiotic in the Kristevan sense, and in a way similar to poetic language owing to their expressive syntax, they are however used in radically different ways in Annie Proulx’s novel and in Lasse Hallström’s film adaptation of it. While the former poses them as a trace of the hero’s faulty primitive state, bound to disappear as he gains access to his own subjectivity, they are presented in the latter as both the instrument and the climax of this evolution. Yet, their use in both works confirms their status as an intertext: an intermediary form of discourse between the pre-verbal and the verbal, they illustrate the gap which separates Quoyle from his accession to subjectivity through his mastering of language.
Cet article défend l'idée que, dans The Shipping News, l'irruption de titres de presse pour exprimer les pensées du personnage principal sert de manière primordiale sa caractérisation et l'exposition de son parcours psychologique. Participant du sémiotique (au sens kristévien) du fait d'une syntaxe d'expressivité qui les apparente au langage poétique, ils font néanmoins l'objet de traitements radicalement différents dans le roman d'Annie Proulx et dans le film qui en a été tiré par Lasse Hallström. Mais alors qu'ils sont dans le premier la trace d'un état primitif défaillant du héros, vouée à disparaître dans son accession à la subjectivité, ils sont, dans son adaptation cinématographique, à la fois l'instrument et la consécration de cet avènement. Pour autant, l'emploi qui en est fait confirme dans les deux oeuvres leur statut intertextuel : discours intermédiaire entre le pré-verbal et le verbal, ils illustrent l'espace qui sépare Quoyle de son accession à la subjectivité à travers la maîtrise du langage.
