La forme des nuages : science et poésie au tournant des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles

Abstract : On the Modifications of Clouds was published by Luke Howard in 1803; the book could be considered as one of the symptoms of the growing specialization of scientific disciplines and of the so-called separation of science and literature. The young chemist and meteorologist invented the classification of clouds, tearing them off, in a certain way, from poetry and theology. His essay and its reception show how the representation of clouds is always accompanied by remarks about the limits and the claims of scientific and literary discourses. Howard’s works reveal the wide variety of relationships between scientific and literary discourses and testify to common concerns.
