« Le corps de l'emploi ». Les étudiants et leurs stratégies d'insertion professionnelle

Abstract : Although gender issues, or the question of how an individual’s sex influences his/her social relationships, have proved worthy of study, the body of French sociological research devoted to the esthetic efforts of men remains small compared with research concerning the feminine equivalent. Based on data from a survey by questionnaire, this article examines the efforts of male university students to improve their physical appearance. Specifically, it analyzes the way these young men use physical training programs designed to improve the body’s form to increase their chances of finding employment. Bodybuilding is frequently one of the avenues chosen. Certain students feel that this activity will produce a symbolic capital that can be reinvested within the framework of their future professional activity, either on the job market, or in their chosen profession. In a sense, these physical training activities become part of their job-seeking strategy.
