Ancrage réaliste et interventions surnaturelles. Transgression et subversion fantastiques des références dans les nouvelles de Heinrich von Kleist

Abstract : Kleist’s short stories like the stories Goethe placed in his Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten are written like the special form of narrative or Erzählungen. This category which was at the time quite vaguely defined could be called the fairy tale or Märchen, a free expression of the imagination, as well as the “novella” (Novelle) which was according to Wieland more closely embedded in the real. In Kleist’s short narrative texts the marvelous, be it based on Christian ideology or linked to superstitions about ghosts, creeps into everyday life in a disturbing way. In the twentieth century such a narrative form was defined as “fantastic” in the generic sense of the term. This duality appears in Kleist’s short stories as a questioning of the models of legend or ghost story. In his Unterhaltungen Goethe had himself already dissociated the motif of the revenant from every univocal interpretative scheme. But what is for Goethe a distant aesthetic play is for Kleist an immediately threatening experience so that the fantastic takes on an anthropological and existential dimension.
