Le tourisme, facteur d'intégration territoriale en Patagonie

Abstract : Tourism, a factor of territorial intégration in Patagonia Patagonia is marked by the accumulation of spatial peculiarities : end of the world, breathtaking immensity, contrasted massive orography, all those discontinuities which make any attempt of valuation or any territorial integration difficult. To the scale of the American south continent, Patagonia spreads as a long cone towards the southern borders, splitting into fragment islands, resembling a finisterre, a suburb marked by its extreme estrangement, away from all major activities. The severity of the climater, the high latitudes confirm this situation of extreme marginality marked by the hyperaustrality of the country. In the prospect of territorial integration, the above characteristics are far from constituting an asset. Territorialising a vacum is not an easy matter. Nevertheless, it sometimes happens that some far away places become most active, pushing aside the established order to the point of taking the form of a pioneer front. Tourism has indeed the subversive power of being capable to produce some value in places which a priori have none, precisely where other sectors of activity have failed. This contribution aims at dealing with the problem of developing tourist activities in a context of margins and borders. The suggestions of the Patagonian nature, valued by the presence of vast protected areas, have become highly desirable due to the western societies evergrowing craze for tourism in natural environments and their craving for adventure. Otherness is coupled in terms of vastness, high altitudes and australity. We therefore observe the actual formation of a tourist front, advancing towards the south, pushing away the limits of the ecoumene beyond the High southern latitudes, and reaching Tierra del Fuego, upgrading Ushuaïa to the rank of a touristic mecca. In its trail, new stations appear, grow, take the form of a real touristic archipelago, thus contributing to a better territorial intregration.
