L’Union centrale des Polonais en France face au Conseil national des Polonais en France dans le Nord-Pas-de-Calais (1944 – 1953)

After the Second World War, the community life of the Polish migrants and their descendants, particularly dense in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, was organized into two deeply opposing camps. One of them, the Polish National Board in France, was committed to the Polish communist government established at the end of 1944. The other one was opposed to the regime. He was baptized Polish Central Union in France. The first one rapidly outgrew its rival, owing to the support of the Polish authorities and of the French Communist Party. The “Polishness” of the migrants and their descendants, defined by their attachment to Poland and its culture, became a key issue in the conflict between these groups. This confrontation persisted until the banning of the Polish National Board in France in January 1950, a prohibition from which the Polish Central Union in France can’t benefit.

Au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale, la vie associative des migrants polonais et de leurs descendants, particulièrement dense dans le Nord-Pas-de-Calais, s’organise en deux camps antagonistes. L’un d’eux, le Conseil national des Polonais en France, est favorable au gouvernement communiste polonais instauré à la fin de l’année 1944. L’autre est opposé à ce régime. Il est représenté par l’Union centrale des Polonais en France. La première fédération prend rapidement le dessus sur sa rivale, notamment grâce au soutien des autorités polonaises et du Parti communiste français. La polonité des migrants et de leurs descendants, définie comme l’attachement de cette population à la Pologne et à sa culture, devient un enjeu central dans l’opposition de ces groupements. Cet affrontement persiste jusqu’à l’interdiction du Conseil national des Polonais en France en janvier 1950, interdiction dont l’Union centrale des Polonais en France ne peut que tirer profit.
