La traduction française des toponymes américains connotés : un phénomène interculturel

This article starts from the assumption that toponyms can be loaded with implicit meaning and that the connotations at work in a text belonging to a given culture have to be located and recognized before the text can be translated. A few examples taken from the American novel Maybe the Moon (1992) by Armistead Maupin will help prove the point and examine the range of solutions chosen by the translator. The publisher’s avowed aim is to create unfamiliarity, but if the preservation of the foreign term is in keeping with this aim, it may hinder understanding for the reader of the target text. On the other hand, the clarification engendered by semantic substitution denies access to the Other and might even project a false or stereotyped image of the Foreign. That is why this article argues for “incrémentialisation” (an explicitation that is introduced within the text and accompanies the foreign term), a compromise that enables the translator to play his role as a mediator by providing access to meaning while making sure that contact is established between the two language-cultures involved.
Cet article part du principe que les toponymes peuvent être chargés d’implicite et qu’il faut repérer et déterminer quelles connotations sont actualisées dans un texte appartenant à une culture donnée avant d’en envisager la traduction. Quelques exemples tirés du roman américain Maybe the Moon (1992), d’Armistead Maupin, permettent d’illustrer le propos et d’examiner l’éventail de solutions adoptées par le traducteur. Si, dans la perspective de dépaysement affichée par l’éditeur, la préservation du terme étranger est louable, elle risque cependant de gêner la compréhension du lecteur du texte d’arrivée. En revanche, l’explicitation par substitution sémantique occulte le contact avec l’Autre et peut même projeter une image erronée ou stéréotypée de l’Etranger. C’est pourquoi cet article plaide pour la voie médiane de l’incrémentialisation, qui permet au traducteur de jouer son rôle de médiateur, en donnant accès au sens mais en s’assurant également que le contact s’établit entre les langues-cultures en présence.
