Les épopées travesties, “appropriées à l’histoire du temps” (XVIIe siècle)

Abstract : Anachronisms in the so-called “épopées travesties” written in French xviith century fulfil two functions: they desecrate a genre exemplified by the Ancients to leave the field open for a modern, human-oriented literature, and for a language freed from numerous contraints; they degrade the genre used to celebrate history, in order to reach, through more and less clear indications, contemporary political targets such as Mazarin during the Sling; and beyond, in order to mock the belief in hierarchies and aristocratic values, in short, to ‘demolish’ heroes.
