« Ce chapitre me fera du cabinet. » L'intime dans « Sur des vers de Virgile », Essais, III, 5

Abstract : In “Sur des vers de Virgile”, an essay whose obscenity will be scandalous, Montaigne carries out his project of exposing himself, by proposing a confession about “his morals”, in other words about his sexual life. Not content with lifting the ban on openly discussing sexuality, he proposes a “sexual self-portrait” and reveals, in the modern sense of the term, his intimacy; yet this chapter is above all intended for female readers whom he invites to retire into their “cabinet” to read it; far from the masculine stereotype, he acknowledges his failures and his share of feminity, perhaps in an ultimate attempt at seduction.
