Des positions radicalement antagonistes ? La Mesnardière et d’Aubignac face aux possédées de Loudun

Abstract : The Traitté de la Melancholie, published in 1635, is the first work of La Mesnardière. By supporting the thesis of the possession of the nuns of Loudun, the young twenty-four-year-old doctor obtained Richelieu’s protection, especially since his text, addressed to the “honnestes gens”, was skillfully placed in the current of new ideas and values. The comparison with the Abbe d’Aubignac, who saw nothing but “deceit” among the possessed, illuminates the opportunism of the young author.
