The train of Lima to The Oroya: Construction and Idea of Progress in the Railway Trans-Andean Project of the Polish Engineer Ernest Malinowski (1818-1898)
El tren de Lima a La Oroya : construcción e idea de progreso en el proyecto ferroviario transandino del ingeniero polaco Ernesto Malinowski (1818-1898)
Résumé
At the time of political Civilisme, the development of the Peruvian railways in
an unknown ladder to marks a decisive stage of the conquest of the space which Light had been
only sketching. Th e engineer characteristic artist of classical art succeeds at the end of the XIXth
century technologist‘s face able of controlling complex and especially heterogeneous data. More
precisely, Ernest Malinowski (1818-1899) becomes, with other technicians, the key of arch of the
rail strategy of the Republic of Peru by taking the post of chief architect of an andean territory
conceived in terms of fl ux and networks, a territory of agility and exchanges to which are going
to compete, in the name of the modernity, the diff erent developments of which she sees herself
charged. Th e action of the Polish engineer, formed in the School of Bridges and put on by Paris,
practices progressively as part of a cogitation which must lead to a system of mixed economy which
will relieve fi nances of public potency while favouring industrial and commercial development.
Th e space and fl uvial elements are irrefutably the spindle of andean plan and the guiding plans
of use and working of soil on a national scale are the foundation. To conceive the central line
of andean railway, Malinowski wants to control all questions which settle, of the choice of the line
in that of the best engine in the counting of ballasts and rubbles by way of the mining development.
En la época del civilismo político, el desarrollo del ferrocarril peruano, a una escala
desconocida hasta aquel momento, marca una etapa decisiva en la conquista del espacio que las Luces
solo habían esbozado. Al ingeniero artista característico del arte clásico, aparece a fi nales del siglo XIX
una fi gura de tecnólogo capaz de dominar los datos complejos y sobre todo heterogéneos. Así que
Ernesto Malinowski (1818-1899) se convierte, con otros técnicos, en la clave de la estrategia ferroviaria
de la República del Perú al asumir el puesto de arquitecto en jefe de un territorio andino concebido
en términos de fl ujos y de redes, de un territorio de la movilidad y de los intercambios. La acción del
ingeniero polaco, diplomado de la Escuela de Puentes y Calzadas de París, se ejerce progresivamente
en el marco de una refl exión que debe desembocar en un sistema de economía mixta, que aliviará las
fi nanzas de la potencia pública y favorecerá el auge industrial y comercial. Las componentes espacial
y fl uvial son indudablemente la base del proyecto central andino, y los planes directores de utilización
y de explotación de los suelos a nivel nacional constituyen su fundamento. Para concebir la línea de este
ferrocarril, Malinowski quiere controlar todos los asuntos que se plantean, desde la elección del trazado
a la de la mejor locomotora, al cálculo de los terraplenes y escombros pasando por la explotación minera.
