La literatura y su función crítica

Abstract : This article aims at clarifying the issue of the usefulness of literature from some thoughts which make the tension between literary usefulness and literary protest within history and culture palpable. The first part attempts to put in perspective the relation between imagination and literary usefulness and also to make three authors respond to one another : P.B. Shelley, who wants to demonstrate the strength of imagination through its opposition with reason ; Baudelaire, for whom imagination aims at creating critical awareness ; and Carlos Fuentes, for whom “In literature, the name of knowledge is imagination”. In the second part, we explore the defence of the novel by Sábato, Kundera and Carpentier, trying to show the persistence of the opposition between reason and imagination established by Shelley. To the defence of poetry and the novel we add the position of Pascal Quignard, who views the usefulness of literature as a challenge to and a negation of history but also as the source of an open criticism of culture from a marginal position.
